Many people want to visit Chiang Mai for 3 days but worry about how to plan an itinerary that covers everything without getting too tired. Chiang Mai has many attractions that are quite spread out. As a local driver familiar with the routes, we will recommend a flexible trip plan, allowing you to choose your own departure times and duration at each stop, ensuring you get ample rest.
Principles for a Relaxing 3-Day Trip
The key is not to over-pack your schedule and to understand how long each route takes. Organizing your itinerary by zones will help reduce travel time and allow you to immerse yourself more in each location.
Importantly, our vehicle is a Deepal S07 electric car, offering a comfortable, quiet ride with no fuel smell. It comfortably accommodates 4 passengers along with 2 large suitcases and 2 carry-on bags. The driver is a local who knows the routes well, so you don’t have to worry about driving yourself. There is no self-drive service, and the price includes energy costs within the agreed scope.
Day 1: City Tour and Doi Suthep (Half-Day to Full-Day)
For your arrival day or the first day of your trip, focus on attractions not far from the city center to allow your body to adjust.
Morning: Explore Temples in the Old City
- Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang are important temples in the city center, within walking distance of each other. Arriving early in the morning allows you to experience a peaceful atmosphere with fewer crowds, and you might even witness monks collecting alms or performing morning rituals.
- Tha Phae Gate is another worthwhile stop for photos. Visiting early in the morning offers beautiful light and more space for photography before it gets crowded later in the day.
- Recommendation: If you plan to visit several temples in the city, wear comfortable walking shoes as you’ll be doing a fair bit of walking, and prepare respectful attire suitable for temple visits.
Afternoon: Ascend Doi Suthep
- Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and Phu Phing Palace are along the same route. Going up Doi Suthep in the late afternoon helps avoid tour buses, which usually ascend between morning and noon, resulting in less traffic on the mountain.
- Route: Wat Phra That Doi Suthep together with Bhubing Palace is about 35 km return from the city, on an uphill and quite winding road. Those prone to motion sickness might want to bring motion sickness medication, as the road has continuous curves.
- Timing: You can choose your own departure time from the city. If you want to spend more time on the mountain, you can leave earlier. But if you prioritize comfort and a relaxed pace, a late afternoon departure is a good option.
- Suitable Package: If you’re only visiting the city and Doi Suthep, the Full-Day 8-hour package (2800 Baht) is sufficient. Alternatively, for a half-day afternoon trip, the Half-Day package (1800 Baht) is available.
Day 2: Embrace Nature (Choose One Route)
Today, you should choose only one natural route to avoid getting too tired. There are two main popular options:
Option 1: Doi Inthanon (Full-Day)
- Doi Inthanon Summit is the highest mountain in Thailand. The weather is cool all year round, even in summer. Visiting in the early morning increases your chances of seeing the sea of mist (though not guaranteed) and fewer crowds. If you depart from Chiang Mai early in the morning, you’ll reach the national park entrance and can start exploring by late morning.
- Stops: Besides the summit, there are Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon–Naphaphonphumisiri, which offers beautiful panoramic views, and various waterfalls such as Vachiratharn Waterfall and Mae Ya Waterfall. If you don’t want to rush, choose to visit only 1-2 waterfalls.
- Recommendation: The route up Doi Inthanon (approximately 200 km round trip) is mountainous with many curves. Those prone to motion sickness should be prepared. The weather at the summit is very cold, so bring a warm jacket, windbreaker, gloves, and a hat, as it can be chilly even on sunny days. Also, wear comfortable walking shoes as there will be a fair amount of walking.
- Suitable Package: Doi Inthanon Full-Day (3500 Baht)
Option 2: Mae Kampong and Hot Springs (Full-Day)
- Mae Kampong Village is a small village nestled in the mountains, offering pleasant weather with a stream flowing through it. The journey to Mae Kampong (about 92 km round trip including the hot springs) involves a rather steep and winding uphill road in some sections. The driver will take it carefully.
- Activities: In Mae Kampong, the focus is on strolling around, enjoying nature views, sipping coffee, and experiencing local village life. Visiting early in the morning, when there are fewer people, makes for a more relaxed walk and photo opportunities.
- Hot Springs: You can stop at hot springs along the way to relax your muscles after the journey.
- Recommendation: Although not as high as Doi Inthanon, Mae Kampong enjoys cool and comfortable weather year-round. Bring a light jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
- Suitable Package: The Mae Kampong route is quoted in chat (send your date and the stops you want).
Day 3: Relaxed Tour or Long-Distance Journey (Choose According to Your Interests)
For the last day, you can choose whether to embark on another long journey or focus on a relaxed city tour for souvenir shopping and relaxation.
Option 1: Chiang Rai Tour (Full-Day)
- If you’ve never been to Chiang Rai, this is a great opportunity to see Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) and Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple), both known for their distinctive and unique architecture.
- Travel: From Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai (approximately 380 km round trip) is quite a long journey; the Chiang Rai full-day package runs about 10–12 hours in total. Departing early in the morning is essential to have ample time at each attraction and to avoid returning to Chiang Mai too late.
- Recommendation: This day involves long car rides. Prepare snacks and drinks for the car and allow time for restroom breaks along the way. The driver will inform you of suitable rest stops.
- Suitable Package: Chiang Rai Full-Day (4800 Baht)
Option 2: Relaxed City Tour or Special Activities (Half-Day to Full-Day)
- If you’ve traveled a lot and feel tired from the past two days, today is a good opportunity to relax in the city. You might choose to stroll through Warorot Market for souvenirs, visit charming cafes, or indulge in a spa massage to unwind.
- Activities: Taking a Northern Thai cooking class is also an interesting activity, or you could visit any remaining temples in the city that you haven’t seen yet.
- Recommendation: This is a relaxed day, so you can choose your departure time as you please, without rushing.
- Suitable Package: Half-Day (1800 Baht) or Full-Day 8-hour package (2800 Baht) if you wish to spend the whole day.
